(NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

Hello! Bonjour! 你好! You're probably here for information on the FWRP Neuhaven School for the Gifted and Powerful, no? Plan on making a character or something? Well, you're in the right place! Here is where all the information you'll need is. Think of it as a library, except you can't take anything.

Before we begin, I'd like to introduce you to some terminology.

cryptid (n.)- (cryptozoology) A creature known only from folklore or legend, the existence of which is not proven by scientific observation; a creature that is generally unknown to mankind that may be of non-human, extraterrestrial, or extradimensional origin, possibly having been believed to have gone extinct or never existed at all. Many beings and creatures in the Rift are cryptids (ie mothmen) or of mythological origin (ie gorgons).

monster (n.)- a creature that's basically our equivalent to regular animals, i.e. fish, but usually much more deadly and/or a cryptid or of mythological origin (ie dragons)

The Rift (n.)- a term for a collective of mostly hidden cities where magic and all that comes with it flourishes, may or may not be bound to the same logic as regular cities

riftcity (n.)- see The Rift

RU (n.)- the Rift Union, which is sort of like the EU, but with most of the riftcities

Neuhaven (n.)- the first riftcity, located on the German coast

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

The school, known as Neuhaven School for the Gifted and Powerful, overlooks the city's beach and the oceanic horizon. Its white towers and tiled, red-orange roofs boldly contrast the azure sky. Flags wave from atop the pointed tips of the rooves. Founded hundreds of years ago by the Rift Union (RU), students are admitted to Neuhaven three ways:
- They're gifted and/or their power has the potential to bring a lot of good
- They're extremely powerful and/or their power has the potential to bring a lot of bad, and/or the RU wants to keep an eye on them
- Usually five students per year are admitted via lottery.
A student will receive an invitation to the school via what we're going to call a "thwack letter". They're called thwack letters because they're known to thwack the recipient's face. You just have to know the basics about who you're sending the letter to, you let the letter go, and let it zoom off to do its work. If there's evidence someone may be illiterate though, a representative for the school is sent.

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

While many species coexist in Neuhaven- and the Rift in general- in this FWRP, only certain species will be RPable. They are as follows:

Human- no explanation needed here. May have powers of some sort.

Fairy- after intermixing with humans over various generations, most fairies in Neuhaven are indistinguishable from humans, though a handful aren't. Originating from another dimension, fairies are creatures of magic, and all of them have powers to some extent. Most of the fairies living in Neuhaven are the descendants of some fairies that ventured out of their home dimension, integrated into Earth cultures instead of fairy cultures. They may or may not have wings, usually feathered or insect-winged. Once in their life, a fairy enters a stage known as metamorphosis, where they become dormant for a week or so, sometimes sprouting wings, among other things. Their body generally sort of remakes itself and adds new bits and pieces according to what the fairy has to be protected against and/or needs. Got frostbite? Metamorphosis gives you more resistance to the cold.

Alien- many variants of aliens live in Neuhaven, so "alien" is somewhat of a blanket term. Some of them have powers, especially ones with non-alien ancestors, but most don't. Most aliens' families have only recently been living in Neuhaven.

Were- weres, as they're called, are the shapeshifters of Neuhaven. Some may or may not have uncontrollable bursts of shapeshifting into an animal, mostly during the full moon due to the plethora of werewolves living in the city. A good portion of weres have some sort of power apart from changing into an animal. Most weres can only shapeshift into one animal, but over the course of their life, they may learn to change into more than one.

Vampire- the vampires of Neuhaven are generally separated into two classes: "high" vampires, aka vampires whose families have lived in Neuhaven for hundreds of years, and "low" vampires, whose families have only recently immigrated to Neuhaven from Romania. Many high vampires look down on low vampires, causing low vampires to think of high vampires as snooty, and romances between them are generally discouraged. Despite the insistence of each class, though, they're not separate species. Vampires aren't killed by light, but are incredibly sensitive to it, and a high amount of exposure to sunlight may cause their skin to catch on fire. They also don't require blood, but as excess amounts of "normal" food can cause food poisoning for vampires, many prefer at least a little bit of blood every once in a while. Their eyes are usually a reddish-brown color, with gold being uncommon and hazel being rare.

Demons- the demons of Neuhaven are a... strange bunch. Many have mixed with humans over the generations, resulting in pretty humanoid appearances; many humans have demon descent and vice versa. Demons can have both "unrealistic" and realistic hair eye colors; their skin is usually not human tones, usually being blue or purple, but other colors do exist- as do human colors. Some demons may also have tails and horns. They have a wide variety of powers, though most of them revolve around the "shadier" powers- stuff related to death, fire, etc. A lot of them can levitate/hover a little, just a little, because demons. Otherwise, their powers are generally related to pretty destructive stuff. No one really knows where they came from, but they've been here for hundreds of years, and even that fact notwithstanding, no one's going to ask them to leave. Despite this, and in part due to their usual powers, demons are subject to skepticism from other species; an association between humans-with-destructive-powers and demons also exists, and while many humans with destructive powers may have some demon ancestry, the larger portion of them actually have fairy ancestry and/or mixed demon and fairy ancestry with some who-knows-what in there. Demon awareness activist groups stress this because in media and among the older generation(s), there's a whole stereotype about having "bad" powers = demon or related to demons = villainous, evil, etc.

Hybrids- not necessarily their own species, but hybrids between species do exist. The most common hybrids are fairy-human hybrids, and the least common are alien-vampire hybrids. Most human-magical-species hybrids don't have appendixes.

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

GOVERNMENT
Neuhaven- and the RU itself- is a democratic government. In Neuhaven, every four years, an election is held for mayor. Whoever gets the most votes becomes the mayor. There's no parties, just people running. A mayor can only be in office for two terms. Other members of the city's government are appointed by the mayor once they attain office. If the mayor's conduct is found to be unlawful or break the law, citizens are allowed to call for a vote to kick the mayor from office.

The mayor represents the city in many branches of the RU's government. The mayor may make executive decisions involving the city, but cannot make executive decisions for all rift cities in the country, however many there may be now or in the future- that is the job of the Minister, or as it's known in Germany, the Rift President. Rift Presidents are elected democratically and may be in office for as many terms as they wish, but elections must be held once every six years. Candidates for president can only run for president when at least three members of a riftcity's government nominate them. The Rift President oversees the various ministries, such as the Ministry of Outreach and Interrift Relations, Ministry of Affairs of Cryptids & Monsters, etc. of their particulary country's "rift government". They also represent their country in the RU. The current Rift President of Germany is Roman Winter.

New citizens/arrivals to Neuhaven are registered at city hall, where they fill out various documents. If they are under the age of eighteen, they may be placed with a family/in the city's foster care system or, if found to have the potential to attend, are admitted to NSGP.

TECHNOLOGY
Technology, social media, etc. in Neuhaven is a little different from the rest of the world. Various phone brands are still distributed after some modifications to prevent tracking; however, they're not distributed by the companies that made them, i.e. Apple and Samsung. Much technology is rooted in renewable energy, and with the recent introduction of alien technology, Neuhaven is overall pretty modern, but a bit ahead in terms of technological advancement.

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

The following classes are classes your characters may be eligible to take. The education model is based on an International Rift Model (IRM), where years are equivalent to grades in America. You can be admitted to the school starting at Year 9 and ending at Year 12. Three years of math, two years of arts, three years of a foreign language apart from your native language, four years of a magical study, two years of a social study, and two years of physical sciences are required to graudate; if you have documents from whatever school you transferred to NSGP from that show you fit these requirements, some of the requirements may be waived. Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

MISC STUFF
- Neuhaven is invisible to the naked eye. It becomes visible when you walk up this one staircase on the beach, next to where the city's boardwalk is- and yes, just a random staircase on the German coast, smack on the beach. Climbing up the staircase turns the city visible to the one who climbed it, although each step increasingly induces nausea, so you may or may not vomit by the time the city is visible. The nausea and eerie feeling people get when they get near the staircase is meant to ward off those who may not have the best intentions, though anyone can climb up it tbh. If you were born in the city, you can see it, staircase or not.
- Various forms of magic exist in Neuhaven, with magic varying from individual to individual. Most magic manifests in the form of all the different powers its citizens possess.
- NSGP doesn't have a uniform, but it does have a dress code.
- NSGP's school colors are blue, white, and gold.
- Students have two options when it comes to sleeping over at the school: they can either live in a dorm or only go to the school during the day, though after school hours, students living at the school can leave whenever they want as long as they're back by 10 P.M. If a student isn't going to be present at school for over twenty-four hours, they must notify the school.
- The school serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (dinner being for the students living at school, though day students are allowed to attend).
- This FWRP takes place in the same universe as Forumsville, a Discord RP, although Neuhaven and Forumsville have not established contact. Characters cannot be active in Forumsville and Neuhaven at the same time unless there's a reason for it.

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

NEUHAVEN METRO

The Neuhaven Metro is the city's rapid transit system. It's owned and operated by the city. It's free on the weekends and for students. Adults all have debit cards of sorts that they use to swipe and get on the metro and whatnot.

TRAVEL BETWEEN RIFTCITIES
Travel between riftcities can happen in a number of ways. If you want to opt for a less covert way, dragon-riding is a good idea, but you have to be careful- someone could see you, y'know? If you can, you could also do some teleportation. Sometimes portals are opened to travel between riftcities via pocket-watch shaped devices known as Openers, but you have to be precise about where you want to go or the portal will take you somewhere random based on an educated guess; you can't just be like "take me to Pulau Rots", you have to name a specific street corner in Pulau Rots or else for all you know you'll wind up on a rooftop of a house you never knew about on the edge of the city.

Re: (NSGP) NSGP Information Thread

Etymologies for some of the riftcities, because I need to get my brain moving
- Sugar Bay's etymology is inspired by the possible origins of the real Coffee Bay, a place in South Africa. Basically a boat was sailing by when it dropped a sugar-filled cargo into the ocean. So Sugar Bay.
- The kanji for Akamatsu (赤松) mean "red pine". You can probably guess why the city was named Akamatsu.
- Tabanilo is derived from tabing-ilog, which I believe means riverside in Tagalog and Filipino? Not entirely sure, but Tabanilo's basically just a poorly-done-on-my-part, probably corrupted Hispanicization.
- The characters for Haicheng (海成) mean "sea city", referring to the fact the city is on the coast of China. Unlike Haizhou smh.
- Gwangseong (광성) means "bright city" in Korean.
- Royroda is a corruption of "Royal Road".
- Predecamero was me slapping some Portuguese on that city and just smushing the words together.
- Son Kwae means "elephant forest" in Akan I believe?
- Fallenhead got its name because a long time ago a bunch of heads got cut off there. It was intense.
- Pulau Rots is a mix of Indonesian and Dutch. If I recall correctly, pulau means "island" in Indonesian, while rots means "rock" in Dutch. So, rock island.
- Scalebridgewest is derived from the original Welsh name for the city, Y Bont-Cen, with the -west suffix being added to distinguish it from ANOTHER city called Scalebridge (spoiler: the other Scalebridge no longer exists)

HOLIDAYS (APART FROM THE ONES WE CELEBRATE)

The Solstices- the solstices have traditionally been revered and celebrated as days of great power, and as such, people revel in them. Large festivals are held the days of the solstices.

May 15th- May 15th is celebrated as the day Neuhaven became a riftcity. There's not really any festivals for May 15th, but there is communal buffet at city hall.

ill update this in a hot minute
